Spooky Lucia di Lammermoor Violin Bow Shadow

The last time we played Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor at the Arizona Opera was in 2007. I stood in my bass-playing spot and surreptitiously took pictures of the people around me in the pit, but Toru caught on and ended up posing for me. We were going for the spooky look, since Lucia goes slightly mad towards the end of the opera.

I came across this photo while going through my archives. I played around with it in 2007, but wasn’t satisfied with my results. This time I upgraded it to the new Lightroom 4 process version, then tweaked the contrast in Photoshop. Then I used Topaz Labs’ Topaz Adjust for a few minutes to bring out crisp details in the music, and to add a bit of extra noise to the shadows.

We’re performing Lucia again, starting this weekend in Phoenix and Tucson. See you there!
