Gulf Fritillary Caterpillar

I planted this passion vine because it’s attractive to butterflies. I didn’t read the fine print that it’s also a good plant for them to lay their eggs and for the caterpillars to have something to eat. The only butterflies that it attracts are Gulf Fritillaries. The caterpillars are voracious. It’s a good thing they are, because the passion vine grows so fast that you can almost watch it grow.  The whole plant is usually covered with caterpillars and cocoons for most of the summer.  There are usually a few Gulf Fritillary butterflies chasing each other around our backyard.
